Artist’s Statement

I am miles away when I paint.  My journey does not take me far from home, but as Twyla Tharp says, “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home”.

Painting swaying, rhythmic, colorful modern landscapes have been a reoccurring theme for me. Like work by Marc Chagall and Paul Gauguin, I paint with bold colors ,striking patterns and mesmerizing blends, giving the viewer a chance to  enjoy the splendors of nature. Art wakes us up emotionally.  It can trigger a feeling that stays with you. As you step into one of my paintings, the distractions of our hectic lives pass away.  The process begins with photographing the shapes and patterns that I encounter. Sometimes my perspective is on horseback other times on foot. I begin each canvas with layers of washed undercoating that serve as the foundation of color development. The shadows and patterns emerge as images grow from my brush.
